Large Format 3D Printing Service UK

FDM parts up to 800 × 800 × 1,000 mm in one piece, or split and joined for larger, printed and finished at our workshop near Cambridge. ISO 9001 certified.

Rapid prototyping workshop benches with staff at work in Whittlesford

Complete Fabrication prints large parts by FDM in one piece up to 800 × 800 × 1,000 mm, mainly in PLA, PETG and TPU, and splits and joins designs that are larger still. For enclosed engineering materials the build volume is up to 340 × 320 × 340 mm, depending on the part. Large FDM suits form models, jigs and fixtures and functional prototypes where size matters more than a fine surface. We have made prototypes in Whittlesford, near Cambridge, since 1986.

What large format FDM suits

How oversized parts are made in sections

When a design is bigger than the build volume, we can split it and join the sections with adhesive or mechanical fixings. We can protect cosmetic faces through orientation, splitting the model or support interfaces, although supported surfaces usually look different. Tell us where the part is loaded, how large the force is, and which faces must look good, and we will plan the split around them.

Accuracy and warping on large parts

As a guide, FDM parts hold ±0.4 mm on suitable rigid parts. Larger parts, nylon, TPU and supported surfaces need separate consideration, and anything tighter should be agreed and checked on a sample. Large flat bases, sharp corners and uneven sections are common trouble spots for warping. Rounded corners, good orientation, dry material and controlled temperatures all help.

Turnaround

JobTypical time
One small part1 to 3 working days
One large part3 to 10 working days
10 small or medium parts3 to 5 working days

These are initial estimates. We confirm the date after reviewing and slicing your files, because drying, supports, finishing, material availability and existing work can all add time.

Finishing

Rigid FDM parts can be sanded, filled, primed and painted, or painted to an approved colour sample. TPU is harder to sand and needs flexible finishes. FDM parts are finished in the same building they are printed in, so one team is responsible from file to finished part. See painting and finishing.

Frequently asked questions

How big can you 3D print?

Our largest FDM build volume is 800 × 800 × 1,000 mm, used mainly for PLA, PETG and TPU. Enclosed engineering materials reach 340 × 320 × 340 mm, depending on the part.

Can you print parts bigger than your build volume?

Often, yes. We can split a design and join the sections with adhesive or mechanical fixings.

How accurate are large 3D prints?

As a guide, FDM parts hold ±0.4 mm on suitable rigid parts. Larger parts, nylon, TPU and supported surfaces need separate consideration, and anything tighter should be agreed and checked on a sample.

How long does a large 3D print take?

One large part typically takes 3 to 10 working days. This is an initial estimate, and we confirm the date after reviewing and slicing your files.

What materials can large parts be printed in?

Mainly PLA, PETG and TPU in our largest build volume. Enclosed engineering materials print in the smaller 340 × 320 × 340 mm volume.

Can large 3D printed parts be painted?

Yes. Rigid FDM parts can be sanded, filled, primed and painted, or painted to an approved colour sample. TPU is harder to sand and needs flexible finishes.
